John is a man from the past based on John Wayne who Sarge recruited to join his elite team to travel through time and kill Temple in Red vs. Blue: The Shisno Paradox.

Role in Plot

Upon being recruited by Sarge and Simmons, John, along with Alex and George, travels in time with them to kill Temple. After Sarge mistakenly kills an actor of Temple on Jax's film set when arriving at the wrong time period, John along with the rest of Sarge's Elite Team, joins Jax to help create his Red vs Blue movie based on the events of Season 15. With the old actor dead, John and Sarge both audition for the part of Temple in the movie. John wins the audition and Sarge swears revenge against John.

He is later seen recast as Sarge in the Red vs Blue movie after the Reds and Blues leave the film's production in Docudrama.

Trivia

• John's armour consists of the Legionnaire helmet and Mark VI body.
• Given John Wayne applied to the U.S. Naval Academy, but was not accepted, he is the only one of Sarge's recruits without military experience. John even notes to Sarge "I sure played my fair share of the law. I ain’t never done none law-keepin’ my own self."
• During the Red vs. Blue panel at RTX 2018, Gus Sorola revealed that the early drafts of the script actually named him John Wayne, and Joe Nicolosi detailed that Rooster Teeth's legal department advised him against using the name (as well as the nickname "Duke") because John Wayne Enterprises is fairly protective of its estate and it could potentially sue.
