Plot[]

Zero and Phase move deeper into the temple, where they encounter a large Temple Guardian, who charges at them. The two initiate a counterattack in order to retrieve the artifact in the temple. As they fight the fierce Guardian, East and One struggle to outmatch Carolina. Rather than work together, East and One use their own individual methods to battle Carolina, but the latter continues to beat them. However, in one instance, the two Shatter Squad soldiers manage to get the upper hand on Carolina by fighting in sync. Axel arrives and tries to tell One and East to stand down but Carolina stops him in order to continue the fight.

East prematurely attacks using her Burst Step ability, but Carolina knocks her down and One quickly after. At the temple, Zero and Phase finally manage to kill the Guardian, which summons a large "key". Zero takes hold of it and gains power from the artifact. Back at the base, Carolina compliments One and East on their talent. East walks away in disappointment but One tries to comfort her. East refuses her gestures, angering One, and the two begin a heated argument. When Axel stops them, the two go storm off. East temporarily is weakened by the side effects of using her Burst Step.

At Falcon Base, West and Raymond make their way to the lobby and find a weakened Washington sitting in front of a door. Upon reaching him, Diesel bursts through and attacks them. As Raymond moves Wash to safety, West takes on Diesel and manages to hold his own. As Diesel gets the upper hand, Raymond retaliates by firing a rocket at him. Diesel, however, disappears just as he is blasted. West and Raymond leave with Wash. Diesel rejoins Zero and Phase at a secret base, where they prepare to infiltrate Starlight Laboratories to retrieve the final artifact. Zero asks if Phase will be okay if she encounters her father, but Phase snaps back stating that he's not her father. In response to her reaction, Zero tells Phase to stay focused.

Meanwhile, East takes her frustration out through some target practice until she is interrupted by Carolina. Carolina tries to console East but doesn't manage to get through to her. East leaves and runs into West, who tries to comfort her as well. However, East snaps at him and refuses any of his help. Elsewhere, Tiny shows Axel and One a newly spruced up vehicle: the Blacknight Artillery Command Vehicle. Upon listing off its features, Tiny states that it can camouflage based on the driver's mood, armor color, and EDM track. Afterward, Shatter Squad and Carolina attend a debriefing of West and Raymond's intel at Falcon base. They reveal Viper's plan of stealing the last artifact at Starlight Labs and that Shatter Squad's task will be to intercept them. They also reveal Wash's safety and recovery, much to Carolina's relief. She prepares to join them but West advises her to stay with Wash, not wanting to risk her safety. Carolina reluctantly agrees to sit out.

At Starlight Labs, Phase and Diesel successfully break in with a heavy-armored truck and steal the final artifact: another key. As they flee, Shatter Squad pursues them in the Blacknight but are shot at by Zero, who is positioned atop the roof of a building. Axel races up to the roof and confronts Zero directly, initiating a flashback involving the two.

In the flashback the two were teammates working for the Alliance of Defense, where Axel chased Zero to the edge of a cliff and held him at gunpoint. Zero criticized Axel for continuing to work for the seemingly corrupt organization and urged him to come with him. Axel refused, choosing to remain loyal the AOD despite their, according to Zero, appalling experiments and manipulations. Zero then called Axel a coward before Axel shot him and caused him to fall off the cliff.

Back in the present, Axel and Zero are held in a standoff atop the building, in which Zero acknowledges to his old friend the irony of their situation.

Trivia[]

  • The script includes some in-jokes regarding the Rooster Teeth office, most notably the dishwasher quip. [1]
  • The location that Zero and Phase fight the large Temple Guardian in is similar in appearance to the DOOM (2016) depiction of Hell, particularly the Kadingir Sanctum.
  • The eye lasers the large Temple Guardian shoots are similar in appearance to the lasers fired by certain Machine Lifeforms in the 2017 video game NieR: Automata.
  • Two of the large Temple Guardian's weak points were located on his heels, which is likely a reference to later Greek mythology and that Achilles' only weakness was his heel.
  • East glitching and Zero asking Phase how long the 'echo' would last likely foreshadows the reveal that East was a holographic clone of Phase.
  • At one point, Zero fires cannon shots at Shatter Squad, however the cannon he uses has the same design as the Spartan Laser.
